Discover Your Strengths

Not knowing what you want to do yet doesn’t mean you’re behind.
It usually just means you haven’t had the chance to really learn about yourself.

One of the most empowering things teens can do is start discovering their strengths, interests, and natural ways of thinking. When you understand how you’re wired, making decisions about school, careers, and goals becomes less stressful and more confident.

The resources below are tools I often recommend to help teens explore who they are and what paths might fit them best. There’s no pressure to have it all figured out. This is about curiosity, not commitment.

Books to Help You Discover Your Strengths & Possible Career Paths

What Color Is Your Parachute? for Teens

by Carol Christen

A practical, teen-friendly guide to exploring interests, skills, and values. This book includes simple exercises that help you reflect on what you enjoy and what kind of work might suit you.

StrengthsFinder 2.0

by Tom Rath

This book focuses on identifying your natural strengths rather than fixing weaknesses. It includes an online assessment that helps you understand how your strengths show up in school, relationships, and future work.

The Pathfinder

by Nicholas Lore

A deeper look at career exploration, helping you connect personality, values, and interests to meaningful work. Best for teens who enjoy reflection and thoughtful decision-making.

Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance

by Angela Duckworth

Success isn’t just about talent. This book explores how effort, persistence, and mindset play a huge role in long-term growth. A great reminder that strengths can be developed over time.

Now, Discover Your Strengths

by Marcus Buckingham & Donald Clifton

Based on Gallup research, this book encourages focusing on what you naturally do well and learning how to build your future around those strengths.

Designing Your Life

by Bill Burnett & Dave Evans

A creative and flexible approach to building a fulfilling life and career. This book reminds teens that there’s no single “right” path—and that it’s okay to try, adjust, and grow along the way.

Online Tests to Explore Personality & Career Interests

These assessments can offer helpful insights, not labels. Think of them as conversation starters about who you are and what might fit you.

  • 16Personalities (Free)
A popular personality test that offers insights into strengths, challenges, and work styles.

  • Gallup StrengthsFinder (Paid)
A more in-depth assessment that highlights your top strengths and how to use them intentionally.

  • Holland Code Career Test
Matches your interests and work preferences with possible career paths.

  • O*NET Interest Profiler (Free)
Created by the U.S. Department of Labor to help explore careers based on interests and skills.

  • CareerExplorer
A detailed assessment that considers personality, interests, and values.

  • High5 Test (Free)
A strengths-based assessment focused on natural talents and potential.

How to Use These Resources (Without Getting Overwhelmed)

Here’s a simple way to start:

  1. Choose one test, not all of them. Use it to spark reflection, not pressure.

  2. Pick one book that sounds interesting and work through it slowly.

  3. Talk about what you notice—with a parent, teacher, or coach.

  4. Stay curious. Your strengths will continue to grow and change as you do.

You don’t need a final answer right now.
You just need to keep learning about yourself.

That’s where confidence begins.
